March 22 – Rebel Films Presents: Waltz with Bashir (2009)

*Waltz with Bashir* is an award winning animated documentary drama about the 1982 extermination of hundreds of Palestinian civilians at Sabra and Chatila in Lebanon. The brutal massacre was conducted by the Christian fascist “Falange,” with the aid of Israeli troops. The story of the genocide is told through the eyes of Israeli soldiers, one of whom is the director. Their tortured dreams make this a truly unique and powerful film. Actual footage taken in the aftermath of the slaughter further dramatizes the horror. This film was released as Israeli attacks on Gaza resumed in 2009, generating praise for the film but also criticism from the Right and the Left. Join us as we watch and then discuss the powerful *Waltz with Bashir.* For information: Socialist Action – spewnyc@aol.com

March 17 – Cindy Vasquez Painting and Drawings

Word Up is honored to host the first exhibition of a Cindy M. Vasquez Diaz.
Cindy is a New Yorker of Dominican descent. She works primarily in illustration and painting, focusing on figures and portraits, portraying various environments and emotional states. A graduate of the High School of Fashion Industries, she holds an associate’s degree in fine art from LaGuardia Community College, and is currently working toward a bachelor’s degree in art education at City College.
“These are works I produced during my spare time, in my kitchen and bedroom. These works display personal anxieties, desires, comfort, confidence, repression, quirkiness, melancholy, and new discoveries of myself as I proceed in age. Some of these works show environmental illustrations infused with my concurrent thoughts or feelings. Overall, there’s no specific theme except the themes of existing in this lifetime, interacting with old and new people and environments, and growing up in a multicultural home and thriving as I move forward into an unknown blind future.”
