September 17 – Mother Tongues: Launching Sari-Sari Storybooks

Please join independent publisher Sari-Sari Storybooks to celebrate the launch of three new Filipino children’s books this fall!
Very busy octopuses, story weavers, and vegetarian monsters are just a few of the characters you can meet in three new picture books from independent publisher Sari-Sari Storybooks. Join us for readings of “Kalipay and the Tiniest Tiktik” (a Cebuano tale), “Amina and the City of Flowers” (a Chavacano tale), and “Melo the Umang-Boy” (an Ivatan Tale).
There will be a book signing by publisher-author Christina Newhard after the reading. Filipino sweets and coffee will be served. All ages are welcome.
Sari-Sari Storybooks shares the quirky magic of Filipino stories by publishing original picture books in Philippine languages (Ivatan, Cebuano, Chavacano, Waray, Meranaw, and Ayta). These beautifully illustrated stories are written for ages 5-8 years old, are bilingual in English, and come with a glossary and discussion questions.

Christina Buhain Newhard has been fascinated with books since she was five
years old. Born in Manila to a Filipina mother and American father, she
moved to the U.S. at the age of 10, but always holds the Philippines in
her heart. A love for text, image, and story moved her to pursue a career
in graphic design. In asking the question, “how can design strengthen
Filipino culture in a meaningful way?” Sari-Sari Storybooks was born.
Christina is a member of the Type Directors Club, the Society of
Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, and the Independent Book
Publishers Association. She lives in Brooklyn with two black cats.
