Formed in 2008, the cosmic jazz group known as Brahja Waldman—or Brahja for short— is a New York/Montreal-based conspiracy plotting the transmutation of timeless soul. The group is releasing its fifth album, wisdomatic, during a five week tour starting in late April, 2016. Saxophonist and leader Devin Brahja Waldman has performed with Patti Smith, Thurston Moore, Lydia Lunch, Daniel Carter, Sam Shalabi, Warren Smith and many others. He has accompanied his aunt, the great poet Anne Waldman, since the age of ten. Waldman is co-director of Fast Speaking Music, a poetry and music label in NYC.
Uptown’s own two-man instrumental hip hop ensemble, Lexiglass, comprised of keyboardist Alexis Marcelo (Yusef Lateef, Malcolm Mooney) and drummer Will Glass (Lonnie Holley, the Glass Breaks series), have blazed a trail across upper Manhattan, supporting many of the neighborhood’s finest MCs and singers in clubs, tattoo parlors, sneaker shops, lounges–and yes, a bookshop. Their first show at Word Up since the one-two punch of 2015’s 5th anniversary of The Machine and our shop’s 4th birthday party, backing T La Rock, this set will feature works from their Cubetazo Tape series: covers of A Tribe Called Quest and Mobb Deep.
