Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Dan-el Padilla Peralta came to the United States with his family at the age of four. Falling out of proper immigration status not long after arriving, he and his family lived in New York City sin papeles and spent a year in the shelter system. With the support of mentors, he was admitted to some of the best educational institutions in the world and, through determination and hard work, excelled at his academic career. He received his PhD in Classics from Stanford University, is currently a Mellon Research Fellow at Columbia University, and in 2016, he will be an assistant professor in Classics at Princeton University.
