This season’s FACE OUT series at Word Up kicks off with lifelong Washington Heights resident Nelson A. Denis, author of War Against All Puerto Ricans: Revolution and Terror in America’s Colony. The book tells a previously unexplored history, documenting how the US government invaded Puerto Rico in 1898 and, for over a century, quietly but systematically drained the island and its inhabitants through exploitation, repression, and cultural death. Meticulously sourced with over 700 footnotes and dozens of photographs, the book is, in the words of one reviewer, “not just history. It’s history on fire.”
Nelson A. Denis is a former New York state assemblyman and served as the editorial director of El Diario/La Prensa, the largest Spanish-language newspaper in New York. His editorials for El Diario—over 300 of them—won the “Best Editorial Writing” award from the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
