Everyday, over 2 million people in the US are in prisons and jails. Inside these closed and unaccountable systems, people’s rights, minds, and bodies are routinely violated. Among the most horrific violations is the widespread practice of solitary confinement. Right now, in New York State alone, around five thousand people are locked in a cell for 23-24 hours a day. It is said that human beings are social beings but in solitary confinement this part of one’s humanity is intentionally denied – for weeks, months, years, and in some cases even decades at one stretch – and people’s minds and spirits are broken.
