September 30 – Reading: Three New Novels Exploring Feminism

WordUp Keating. Authors 4 jpeg

Join us for a reading of three new novels exploring feminism:
Vera’s Will, by Shelley Ettinger
Play for Me, by Celine Keating
On Hurricane Island, by Ellen Meeropol
Three new novels written by women and published by indie presses explore three different aspects of feminism. Ettinger’s character – grandmother and granddaughter – embody the changing cultural landscape of love and shame; Keating’s Lily radically upends her life to rediscover her authentic self, lost to a focus on marriage and motherhood; Meeropol’s characters, caught up in a national security nightmare, refuse to be victims. Three very different stories ask us to consider how we follow our political and creative passions.

Lexiglass, uptown’s own live hip hop band, featuring Alexis Marcelo on keys and Will Glass on drums, celebrates its first official release: a cassette (and free download) of covers from the last A Tribe Called Quest album, The Love Movement. Recorded live to tape with no overdubs, it highlights the rawness and spontaneity that uptown audiences already know from their shows backing up The Machine, Tellie Floydd, Circa 95 and many more. Live instrumental set, with surprises. // The last time the amazing and highly original vocalist, composer and performer Justin Hicks played Word Up, he electrified a Sundayafternoon crowd with soulful tributes to Walter Dean Myers and Odetta. // Veronica Liu, founder of Word Up, joins in the celebration by presenting a selection of long-simmering writing projects that she has resolved to complete before having a baby very soon after this event.
