April 11 – Celebrate hattie gossett’s birthday with Word Up



Support your local bookstore while saying hello to our neighbor, the poet hattie gossett, who lives at the northern manhattan intersection where the dominican republic meets the republic of harlem, and is author of the immigrant suite: hey xenophobe! who you calling a foreigner?presenting sister noblues; and the pussy & cash suite. In what is truly a celebratory week, April 7th it is also the 100th birthday of Billie Holiday, and in honor of the event, hattie will perform her famous poem for Billie. hattie is a co-founding editor of Essence magazine and Kitchen Table Press. Her books will be for sale at the event, and the first 20 people who make a purchase at Word Up during hattie’s birthday party will receive her new poem, “do all black lives matter equally?”
