“Comunidad | Community”

Exhibition Opening Reception
Sunday, June 8, 2014
3–5 PM
Word Up, 2113 Amsterdam Avenue (corner of 165th St.)

Dominican York Proyecto GRAFICA (DYPG) is a printmaking collective of artists of Dominican descent who live and work in and around New York City. Founded in 2010, the artists of the collective are Pepe Coronado, René de los Santos, iliana emilia garcía, Reynaldo García Pantaleón, Scherezade García, Alex Guerrero, Luanda Lozano, Miguel Luciano, Moses Ros-Suárez, and Rider Ureña.

“Comunidad | Community” is a new portfolio of prints (one per artist) created based on the theme of community. Using techniques in the relief tradition (linoleum, woodcut, etc.), this portfolio gives us a chance to explore this seemingly simple—though often, in reality, complex—concept from a point of view that is uniquely DYPG: diverse in style and execution, and, most importantly, rich in life experience.

Word Up Community Bookshop/Librería Comunitaria, a place created and sustained by the essential need of a community to engage with each other in a common space, is proud to host the debut of DYPG’s new portfolio. Word Up will be producing a book in collaboration with DYPG, featuring writings about the visual work from the bookshop collective. (More about the book launch soon!)
