Since October 2013, a group of young people have been gathering every Wednesday afternoon at the Alianza Dominicana Cultural Center on 166th Street to learn about themselves, their history, their community, and social justice in our free program VOICES: OUR YOUNG PEOPLE SPEAK, in collaboration with People’s Theatre Project. The young artists write, they read, they act, and they play.
We had visits from guest teaching artists throughout the winter—comic book, oral history, and spoken word workshops, instruction in playwriting and performance—and the group has just sent the book of their writings to press.
The group is now gearing up to perform their play, devised from their writings in DIFFERENT PEOPLE, SAME STORIES and experiences over the course of the program.
This year we will have three performances of the group’s play at three different locations uptown!
