Good news: Word Up has been extended till the end of November!
Originally conceived of as a month-long “pop-up” shop, Word Up and its 100% volunteer-powered staff of local residents have sold and/or distributed thousands of books to individuals and organizations, hosted more than 200 performers on the shop’s stage through a rigorous events program, and provided neighbors with a regular, safe venue in which to gather, debate, and engage with others who live in the shop’s immediate environs, on the block, down the way, up the street, and around the corner.
Everyone who volunteers at Word Up would like to thank you for showing your support for the bookshop in all the ways that you have. With our extra time at 4157 Broadway, we hope to build on what we have started and to particularly expand our youth, senior, and Spanish-language programming. To improve our services, we could always use more volunteers! There are 55 and counting, and you can join in the effort by emailing volunteer [at] wordupbooks [dot] com.
Come join us today, Saturday, September 24, from 3 to 7pm, for a community open mic. Word Up is a venue for a massive global reading coordinated by 100 Thousand Poets for Change. Come read a poem, sing a song, unfurl a diatribe. Stand on the stage to show that it matters that we have it and want to hang onto it.
See you soon!!!
